Chakwera Urges Mzuni Graduands to Embrace Positive Attitudes for National Development

By Burnett Munthali

President Lazarus Chakwera has urged graduands from Mzuzu University (Mzuni) to guard against negative attitudes that could render their education meaningless.

He made the call during the university’s 27th graduation ceremony currently underway at Grand Palace Hotel in Mzuzu.

The ceremony, which is being held over two days, will see a total of 2,326 students receiving diplomas and degrees across various academic disciplines.

In his address, President Chakwera cautioned the graduands against developing behaviors such as self-absorption, condescension, pettiness, rudeness, self-pity, and pessimism.

He warned that these negative traits have the potential to nullify the value of academic achievement if not carefully avoided.

The President emphasised that true education is not merely about acquiring qualifications but about cultivating character, humility, and a spirit of service.

He highlighted that the nation expects graduates to be drivers of change, development, and integrity, especially during times when Malawi needs visionary and ethical leaders.

President Chakwera challenged the new graduates to view their education as a tool to uplift others and not as a license for arrogance or entitlement.

He also urged them to take responsibility for the future of the country by using their knowledge to solve real-world problems and contribute meaningfully to society.

The Head of State further reminded the students that their education was made possible through the sacrifices of many, including taxpayers, parents, and educators.

He encouraged the graduands to show gratitude by leading lives of purpose, compassion, and service to others.

The event drew participation from university staff, parents, government officials, and stakeholders who came to witness and celebrate the academic achievements of the graduating students.

The President’s message served as a powerful reminder that education without values can be hollow, and that Malawi’s development hinges not only on intellectual growth but also on moral maturity.

As the two-day ceremony continues, the spotlight remains on how these new graduates will translate their education into action for the benefit of their communities and the nation at large.
