DPP’s Jean Mathanga demands neutral security and transparency ahead of elections

By Burnett Munthali

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Director of Elections Jean Mathanga has called on the Malawi Police Service and the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) to provide impartial security during the electoral process.

Speaking during a recent press briefing, Mathanga stressed that despite assurances from police and military leadership, DPP supporters continue to face threats and intimidation from members of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

She expressed concern over the safety of DPP members, stating that political violence and selective protection are undermining the democratic environment ahead of the September 2025 elections.

Mathanga further questioned the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for its delay in releasing the official roadmap outlining how election results will be transmitted.

According to her, MEC’s silence on this crucial matter raises suspicions and could potentially weaken public trust in the electoral outcome.

She also dismissed the need for Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) systems in managing elections, arguing that Malawi has conducted credible elections in the past without such technology.

Mathanga emphasized that the country is capable of holding free and fair elections using manual methods if necessary, provided that transparency and neutrality are upheld.

Her remarks come at a time of increasing political tension, as various parties prepare for a hotly contested presidential race.

Observers have noted that the credibility of Malawi’s 2025 general elections will depend not only on technology but also on the integrity of institutions and the fairness of the electoral environment.

With this warning, the DPP has added its voice to growing calls for MEC, the police, and the military to act professionally and serve all Malawians equally during the upcoming polls.
