Gangata and Chisale decry political sabotage and demand electoral accountability

By Burnett Munthali

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Central Region, Honourable Alfred Gangata, has expressed strong concern over what he described as a well-orchestrated scheme by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to frustrate DPP operations in the region.

Gangata was speaking during a press briefing where he presented a detailed account of events that allegedly unfolded in Ntchisi. He explained how efforts by the DPP to hold a political rally were sabotaged, attributing the chaos to deliberate maneuvers by the ruling party.

He further stated that the Central Region continues to experience acts of political interference aimed at weakening the DPP’s structures and discouraging its supporters from freely participating in political activities.

Upon concluding his remarks, Gangata handed over the podium to Norman Chisale, who is the party’s National Youth Director. Chisale also addressed the media, reflecting on his communication with senior police officials.

According to Chisale, assurances were made by the police both at the national level and from the officer in charge at Mponela Police Station that the DPP would be provided with adequate security for its gathering.

However, Chisale lamented that these assurances did not materialize, as the DPP was instead subjected to humiliation and disruption, contrary to what the police had promised.

The third speaker was the DPP’s Secretary General, Honourable Peter Mukhito. In his address, Mukhito focused on the party’s engagement with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

He emphasized that the DPP, along with other opposition parties, has raised serious concerns regarding the integrity and transparency of MEC’s systems ahead of the 2025 general elections.

Mukhito called for an independent audit of MEC’s election system to ensure that the electoral process will be fair, credible, and acceptable to all political stakeholders.

He concluded by reaffirming the DPP’s commitment to a peaceful democratic process and called on MEC to prioritize national unity and electoral justice above partisan interests.
