Mutharika demands ban on Smartmatic machines ahead of September Elections

By Burnett Munthali

Former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has declared that the use of Smartmatic machines in the upcoming September elections should not be allowed.

Speaking during a press briefing, Mutharika addressed journalist Annabelle Mtalimanja, firmly stating that the Smartmatic system must not be part of the electoral process.

He questioned why the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is insisting on using a system that has caused various problems in other countries.

Mutharika emphasized that it is alarming for MEC to promote a system that has reportedly triggered electoral challenges elsewhere, raising suspicions about its intentions.

In a passionate appeal, he urged MEC to listen to the voices of Malawians who have expressed concern over the use of such technology.

“Listen to the cries of Malawians, MEC!” Mutharika exclaimed, reinforcing his position that the commission must prioritize transparency, integrity, and public confidence in the electoral process.
