Climate Change and Migration Governance Expert, Gift Richard Maloya, has called on the Malawian government to prioritize the protection and well-being of its migrants in light of the growing complexities of global migration.
Maloya pointed out that economic hardships within Malawi are pushing many citizens to seek opportunities abroad.
He further emphasized that the worsening impacts of climate change are intensifying mobility and displacement among vulnerable communities.
“Malawians in South Africa and other regions face numerous challenges, including xenophobic attitudes, violence, labor exploitation, undignified deportations, and detention,” Maloya stated.
He highlighted that Malawi’s draft Migration Policy presents a timely and crucial opportunity to address these challenges and ensure the protection of Malawian citizens living abroad.
To ensure the policy’s effectiveness, Maloya stressed the importance of focusing on key priority areas.
These include the protection of Malawian migrants, robust diaspora engagement, addressing climate-induced mobility, safeguarding human rights, and promoting peace and security.
By concentrating on these strategic pillars, Maloya believes Malawi can establish a comprehensive migration governance framework that not only protects its citizens but also contributes to national development and strengthens regional cooperation.
He also revealed that efforts are currently underway to establish a Coalition for Migration and Development in Malawi.
This coalition, according to Maloya, will play a vital role in advancing effective migration governance through research, advocacy, and policy dialogue.
“Now is the time for Malawi to seize this opportunity and shape a brighter future for its migrants,” Maloya concluded.
