As Nathenje Trading Centre continues to face a persistent water crisis, residents of nearby Dilawo Village have received much-needed relief thanks to a borehole drilled by a Korean organization, Korea Food for the Hungry International (KFHI).
The borehole, funded through donations from Korea, aims to ease the acute water problems that have long plagued the area.
This life-changing initiative will directly benefit over 150 families in Dilawo and also serve residents of surrounding villages, including Namikoko, Davide, Chakale, Chigwedera, and Chinyama.
The intervention comes as a welcome development in a region where access to clean and safe drinking water has remained a serious challenge for many years.
One woman from Dilawo Village expressed her gratitude, recalling the daily hardships they faced before the borehole was constructed.
“We were drinking water from unprotected wells,” she said. “To make things worse, animals were also drinking from the same sources, which led to widespread waterborne diseases such as cholera.”
She added that although the village had a piped water system managed by an association, the taps had long run dry and were now merely playing grounds for animals.
“These people have really assisted us,” she concluded, acknowledging the positive impact of the new water source.
Group Village Headman Dilawo also welcomed the development, thanking KFHI for coming to their aid when other avenues had failed.
“We have been begging our Member of Parliament for years, but it was water under the bridge,” he said.
He pledged that the community would take good care of the borehole and confirmed that a dedicated committee would be formed to oversee its maintenance and management.
Dilawo Village falls under Traditional Authority Chadza in Lilongwe District and is part of the Lilongwe Mpenu Constituency.
For a long time, the village lacked access to safe and potable water, leading to health and sanitation challenges among residents.
KFHI, the organization behind the intervention, is already active in the area through several community-based initiatives.
Among its projects is a secondary school operating under the slogan “Voice of the Community,” which emphasizes education and empowerment.
The organization also runs a feeding centre that provides meals to children from surrounding areas, with the objective of reducing school dropout rates.
These efforts form part of KFHI’s broader social corporate responsibility strategy, aimed at giving back to the communities in which they operate.
Efforts to speak with the management of KFHI for further comment were unsuccessful, as calls to their office went unanswered.
Nonetheless, the impact of their work is already being felt in Dilawo Village, where access to clean water has finally become a reality after years of struggle and neglect.
