Stanford Chiwambo impressed at the PCZ Flowers Chess Tournament held in Livingstone, Zambia, by finishing with a commendable 4.5 points out of a possible 6.

He tied on points with the tournament’s runner-up, with the final standings being determined by tie-break rules.

Chiwambo, who walked away with a monetary award, remained unbeaten throughout the event, winning three games and drawing the other three.

His performance not only showcased his consistency but also confirmed his growing reputation as a formidable player on the regional chess scene.

Another Malawian, Alain Namangale, also delivered a solid performance by scoring 3.5 points out of 6.

Namangale lost only one game, won two, and drew three to finish in the top 20 out of 50 participants.

Temwa Kumwenda, who competed in a mixed section that included male players, demonstrated resilience and tactical strength.

She managed to collect three points from six games and finished 23rd overall out of 50 competitors.

“These results are impressive. And because chess is more than a game, the trio are touring the Victoria Falls to refresh before coming back home,” said Dadaz Academy founder Susan Namangale.

The tournament not only provided a platform for the young Malawian players to showcase their talent, but it also allowed them to experience international competition, network with peers, and enjoy the rich cultural and natural heritage of Zambia.

Their participation and success in such a prestigious regional event continue to reflect the growing chess potential in Malawi and the impact of developmental academies like Dadaz.

As the players return home rejuvenated, their achievements will serve as motivation for other young talents across the country who aspire to shine on similar stages.
