The Giving Ummah Urges Support for Primary Education in Malawi

Muslims and various organizations across Malawi have been called upon to play a more active role in supporting primary education in the country.

This call was made by Ashraf Matandika, leader of the charitable organization The Giving Ummah, during a donation ceremony at Msalabani Primary School in Nsumbo Village, under Traditional Authority Ngulumya in Machinga District. The organization donated school uniforms to nearly 50 learners, along with hygiene materials aimed at improving the school’s sanitary conditions.

Speaking to TTV, Matandika said the donation is part of a broader initiative planned for the 2025/2026 calendar. He noted that Msalabani Primary School was selected after a needs assessment revealed it to be one of the most under-resourced institutions in the district.

“This is just one of the many acts of service we intend to carry out,” Matandika said. “We believe that education is a powerful tool to change lives, and no child should be denied access to it due to lack of a uniform or basic hygiene supplies.”

Representing the school’s head teacher, Mphatso Msusa thanked The Giving Ummah for the support. He explained that many students are often turned away from school because they lack uniforms, which affects their attendance and academic performance.

Standard 7 student Aaron Mahmoud, one of the beneficiaries, expressed joy at receiving the new uniform. “Sometimes I was sent back home because I didn’t have a uniform. This support has come just in time, especially as I prepare for the national examinations,” he said.

Also speaking at the event was Sophia Mpoya, representing parents of the beneficiaries. She praised the group for easing the burden on struggling families. “With the current economic challenges, it’s not easy for many parents to buy school uniforms. This donation has brought great relief,” she said.

The donation included uniforms, water buckets, cups, brooms, mops, and brushes—items essential for promoting hygiene among learners. According to The Giving Ummah, the total value of the items is estimated at K1.8 million.

The organization has pledged to continue working with communities and schools to support education and child welfare, and it is calling on other stakeholders to follow suit in investing in the future of Malawi’s children.
