Joyce Banda Urges Voters to Choose Proven Leadership Over Empty Promises

People’s Party (PP) president and former Malawi Head of State, Dr. Joyce Banda, has urged Malawians to reflect on their leaders’ track records as they prepare for the 2025 general elections.

Speaking at a well-attended rally at Karonga Freedom Park, Banda reminded the crowd of her past achievements, notably her role in resolving deeply rooted traditional leadership conflicts in the northern region. She recalled her decisive intervention in the appointment of Paramount Chief Kyungu—an issue that had previously been mired in controversy and division.

“The north had waited for a long time for a solution. I took the risk, and today, the Kyungu chieftaincy is stable because I led with courage,” she said to loud applause.

Banda warned the electorate to be vigilant and cautious as the campaign season intensifies, pointing out the danger of trusting politicians who make lofty promises but have no history of serving communities.

“Some are promising you the world, but ask them: what have they done before? What change have they delivered for ordinary people?” Banda challenged.

She also recalled her swift action during her tenure as president in 2012, citing how she managed to end Malawi’s fuel crisis just a week after assuming office.

“There was no fuel in the country. People were sleeping at filling stations. Within seven days, I cleared the queues,” she said.

Looking forward, Banda unveiled key highlights of the PP’s 2025 manifesto, with a bold promise to introduce free secondary school education for all learners. She emphasized her personal commitment to education, noting that she had used her own funds to support thousands of students.

“This year alone, I have paid school fees for 1,500 secondary students, 1,500 university students, and even sent some for master’s degrees abroad—all from my pocket,” she said.

In her final remarks, the former president encouraged Malawians to vote for leaders who deliver results, not rhetoric.

“Malawi needs experienced, action-oriented leadership. This is no time for experiments or fantasy promises,” Banda concluded.

The rally marked another key stop in her ongoing tour of the north as she rallies support ahead of the September 16 tripartite elections.
