A Final Warning to All Opposition parties: Unite or Perish

By Comrade jumbe 29/06/25

There’s an ancient African saying: “When the enemy is at the door, the foolish man argues with his brother.” This, unfortunately, is the shameful reality of Malawi’s opposition parties today.

To every opposition leader and party in this country—UTM, DPP, AFORD, UDF, independents, and all others—this is your moment of truth.

The people are giving you attention and hope not because you are flawless, not because you are visionary, but simply because they are suffocating under the unbearable weight of hunger, poverty, lawlessness, and MCP brutality.

This support is not an endorsement of your leadership—it is a desperate cry for survival.

“A drowning man will hold on to a serpent if it means staying afloat.”

That is the sad reason the people are looking at you today. Their hope in you is born out of suffering, not admiration.

Yet, even in this desperate hour, when unity should be your shield and strategy your sword, you are busy tearing each other apart like vultures fighting over a carcass that is not even yours. You are campaigning harder against fellow opposition parties than you are against the real oppressors.

Your tongues are sharper towards each other than towards the MCP regime. Your greed for positions, your pomposity, your selfish calculations are now your biggest enemy—far greater than even MCP itself.

“He who is hungry for power but lacks wisdom is like a dog chasing a moving car—not knowing what to do with it when caught.”

How can you refuse to build a united front when your people are bleeding?

How can you mock each other while Chimwendo Banda’s Zikwanje gangs roam the streets unchecked?

Where are your mass protests? Where are your joint press conferences?

Where is your collective anger? Where is your national conscience?

You sit in your corners holding secret meetings, trading insults and laughing at each other’s weaknesses—while the people who once believed in you now sit in their homes wondering if you are any better than the very government they seek to remove.

“When fire burns your neighbor’s house, you fetch water—not because you love him, but because your own house could be next.”

Yet here you are, watching as MCP burns democracy, human rights, and the economy, while you pour petrol on your own house with your endless divisions.

Let me speak plainly: MCP and Chimwendo are winning by default.

They don’t even have to fight you—you are destroying yourselves.

Your division is their strategy. Your silence is their protection. Your greed is their insurance.

The people are watching. They know those among you who have been bought.

They see who suddenly changes tones and went quiet They know which opposition leaders have been pocketed by State House like loose change.

“The rat that dances in front of the cat has already written its own death sentence.”

Elections are now just 80 days away. Eighty. The clock is ticking. While you fight for ministerial positions and vice presidency in an imaginary government that doesn’t yet exist, the real battle is being lost.

If by now you cannot form an alliance, then when?
If by now you cannot rise above ego and greed, then how will you rise above the MCP’s dictatorship?

If by now you cannot demonstrate together, march together, and speak together, then how will you govern together if the people mistakenly give you power?

“A tree that refuses to bend with the wind will break.” And when you break, it is the people who will suffer again.

This is your final call: Unite, or Perish The next defeat will be written not by MCP’s strength, but by your own cowardice, disorganization, and selfishness.

But know that we are currently in the situation of which we either swimming or sinking together

History is watching. The people are watching. The next generation is watching.

Don’t go to the drain of history as the generation of leaders who sold democracy freedom for your own interests stomach politics.
