In a decisive move aimed at trimming government spending, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate cancellation of all fuel allowances and allocations for political appointees.
The directive, contained in a statement from the Presidency dated July 15, 2025, is part of Mahama’s broader push to redirect public funds toward national priorities amid growing calls for fiscal discipline.
“Leadership must bear its part of the sacrifices it calls on the people to make,” President Mahama declared, signaling a renewed commitment to responsible governance and public accountability.
This announcement builds on earlier reforms that saw a reduction in the size of government, with fewer ministers and a leaner presidential staff complement.
In a further show of austerity, the government has also suspended all satellite TV subscriptions for public offices, including the Presidency itself.
The statement, signed by Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the measures as critical to aligning state operations with the country’s economic realities.
As Ghana navigates tightening fiscal conditions, Mahama’s cost-cutting stance marks a clear message — government leaders must lead by example.
