The stage is set for another epic chapter in Malawi’s football rivalry as defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets take on perennial challengers Silver Strikers in the 2025 Airtel Top 8 final at Bingu National Stadium this Saturday.
The highly anticipated encounter promises fireworks, with Bullets chasing a historic fourth title while Silver Strikers fight to break their hoodoo against the Blantyre giants in this competition. This marks the third consecutive final between the two sides, heightening both the rivalry and the stakes.
“The tension is real. Silver won’t want a third straight final loss to Bullets, while Bullets are determined to cement their dominance with a fourth crown,” said football analyst Kimu Kamau.
Both teams head into the final on the back of mixed league results — Bullets stumbling to Civo United and Silver Strikers settling for a draw against Moyale Barracks — leaving analysts predicting a tightly contested affair.
Bullets, who boast a remarkable record of six straight Top 8 finals, remain the tournament’s most successful team with three titles. Silver Strikers, champions in 2017 and 2019, are desperate to add a third to their cabinet.
Bullets head coach Peter Mponda said his side is primed for the challenge:
“We are in a different competition now, and our focus is clear — we want to win. We respect Silver Strikers; they are a strong side. We expect a tough match, and we call upon our fans to be our 12th player.”
On the other side, Silver Strikers’ diehard fan DJ Kamtedza believes this is the year for redemption:
“Enough is enough. We believe Silver will rise and finally carry the day. I urge all Central Bankers fans to turn up in numbers.”
The teams last met in the 2024 final, where Bullets edged out Silver in a dramatic finish — a result still fresh in fans’ minds.
As kickoff approaches, the football fraternity braces for a clash that could redefine the rivalry — and perhaps, the history of the Airtel Top 8.
