Independent Presidential Candidate Adil Chilungo Picks Mervis Mwalukuwo as Running Mate

By Suleman Chitera

Independent presidential candidate Adil James Chilungo has named businesswoman Mervis Mwalukuwo as his running mate in the forthcoming general elections, a decision he says is rooted in his commitment to gender inclusion, religious tolerance, and national unity.

Speaking ahead of his formal submission of nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) this afternoon, Chilungo emphasized that Mwalukuwo’s selection is more than a political strategy — it’s a reflection of the values he intends to bring into government.

“This is not just a political decision; it’s a statement,” Chilungo told reporters. “I am a leader who respects and supports women. I am a Muslim, and she is a Christian. Our goal is also to promote religious unity.”

The pair have worked together in business for the past three years, which Chilungo says has laid a strong foundation of trust and collaboration — qualities he believes are essential for national leadership.

Mwalukuwo’s nomination comes at a time when gender representation and interfaith cooperation are becoming central themes in Malawi’s political discourse. Her inclusion positions Chilungo as a candidate attentive to the country’s call for more inclusive governance.

Political analysts say the Chilungo-Mwalukuwo ticket could appeal to voters seeking alternatives to traditional party politics, especially among younger and more progressive segments of the population.

As more candidates file their papers ahead of the MEC’s deadline, the stage is being set for a competitive and potentially transformative election season in Malawi.
