Independent Presidential Candidate Adil Chilungo Submits Nomination Papers, Calls for Peaceful Elections

By Suleman Chitera, Lilongwe, Malawi

Independent presidential aspirant Adil James Chilungo has officially submitted his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), solidifying his place in the September 16 presidential race.

The nomination papers were received by MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja at the commission’s headquarters in Lilongwe.

Chilungo, who is running without political party affiliation, is pairing with Mrs. Mervis Mwalukumo of Karonga District as his running mate. The duo represents a fresh face in the country’s political arena, with Chilungo pledging to bring transformative leadership if elected.

Speaking after the submission, Chilungo expressed confidence in his vision for Malawi, saying, “If entrusted with the presidency, I believe I will have a great opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of our nation.”

He emphasized the need for a peaceful and respectful electoral process, calling on Malawians to listen to the wisdom he brings to the table. “My decision to lead this country was not made yesterday—it’s something I have long considered and prepared for,” he said.

Chilungo also urged voters and political stakeholders to refrain from sidelining him based on his status as a newcomer to the political scene. “Being new to politics should not be a reason for discrimination. Malawi deserves fresh ideas and inclusive leadership,” he added.

In her remarks, Justice Mtalimanja encouraged Chilungo and his campaign team to uphold peace and focus on issue-based campaigning. “As MEC, we urge all candidates to conduct themselves with decorum and direct their messages toward national development,” she said.

Chilungo joins a growing list of presidential hopefuls seeking to lead Malawi in the upcoming general elections.
