Lilongwe, Malawi — Former president and presidential hopeful Joyce Banda has called on Malawians to embrace peace and unity as the country gears up for the September 2025 general elections.
Speaking at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Wednesday, Banda urged political supporters and security agencies to reject violence and uphold democratic values. Her remarks came after submitting her nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), officially cementing her bid for a return to State House.
Banda is contesting under an electoral alliance comprising the People’s Party (PP), the Freedom Party (FP), and the Mafunde Party — a coalition she said is driven by the desire to serve the nation with integrity and compassion.
“We are ready to serve the country. This election must be peaceful because that is what we stand for as an alliance,” said Banda, stressing the importance of a non-violent campaign.
She said the coalition’s core values are rooted in peace, unity, and a vision for economic transformation.
“Violence is not part of the core values of our parties. We have a vision that will uplift Malawians from poverty to development. We are committed to serving Malawians with love, peace and dignity,” Banda added.
She also appealed to all citizens, political players, and state institutions to maintain calm and act within the confines of the law during the election period.
Banda becomes one of the growing number of candidates submitting their credentials to MEC, as the race to the presidency continues to intensify ahead of the much-anticipated September polls.
