Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, has confirmed that the commission has reviewed the nomination documents submitted by the People’s Party and found them to be in order.
However, Mtalimanja clarified that despite the positive initial findings, the documents will still undergo further scrutiny alongside those submitted by other political parties.
“We have gone through the People’s Party documents and everything appears to be in compliance. But as a standard procedure, these documents will be reviewed together with others once we complete receiving submissions from all interested parties,” she explained.

The MEC Chairperson emphasized that the commission is committed to conducting a thorough and transparent verification process and will release a comprehensive report once all nomination papers have been assessed.
In her remarks, Mtalimanja also took the opportunity to advise the People’s Party and its alliance partners to maintain peace throughout the electoral process. She urged them to avoid any form of violence and respect the rule of law.
“As MEC, we will acknowledge the outcome of the elections once results are verified and announced. And we must all remember—there can only be one winner,” she concluded.
The MEC continues to receive and process nomination papers as part of preparations for the upcoming general elections.
