United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has pledged his party’s full commitment to the Women’s Manifesto, a key document outlining the aspirations and demands of Malawian women and girls.
Muluzi made the pledge during a public signing ceremony held in Lilongwe on Monday, ahead of the highly anticipated September 16 general elections. The move signals the UDF’s dedication to promoting gender equality and addressing issues affecting women and girls in Malawi.

The Women’s Manifesto, developed through wide consultations across the country, serves as a roadmap for political and public leaders to implement policies that enhance the lives of women and girls. It covers areas such as access to education, healthcare, political participation, safety, economic empowerment, and protection from gender-based violence.
Speaking during the event, Muluzi said the UDF recognizes the critical role women play in national development and is ready to integrate their demands into the party’s agenda.
“We cannot talk about sustainable development without women. By signing this document, we are committing to practical actions that will uplift women and girls in Malawi,” he said.
Women’s Legal Resource Centre (WOLREC) Executive Director Maggie Kathewera Banda, whose organization is one of the key drivers behind the Women’s Manifesto, praised the UDF for taking the bold step.
“We are pleased that UDF has demonstrated leadership by signing this commitment. This is not just about words—it is about action, and we expect all political players to follow suit,” Kathewera Banda said.
The Women’s Manifesto initiative calls on all leaders, including the President, government officials, political parties, religious figures, and civil society actors, to prioritize gender-responsive policies and make Malawi a safer, more equitable place for women and girls.
As the campaign season heats up, the spotlight will now be on how parties like the UDF plan to translate these commitments into measurable results.
