Awali Rallies Behind Mutharika, Slams Tonse Alliance Over Soaring Costs

By Suleman Chitera

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament for Zomba City North, Bester Awali, has thrown down the gauntlet ahead of the upcoming elections, officially submitting his nomination papers at Mponda Primary School with a strong call for change.

Addressing an energized crowd of supporters, Awali passionately urged Malawians to unite behind former President Peter Mutharika, branding him as “the only hope for a better Malawi.”

In a fiery speech, Awali didn’t mince words in criticizing the Tonse Alliance government led by President Lazarus Chakwera, accusing it of betraying the trust of Malawians.

“Chakwera cannot be trusted again,” he declared. “He promised fertilizer at K4,500, but now it’s selling at a staggering K155,000. People are suffering every day under this administration.”

He further highlighted the rising cost of living, saying Tonse policies have made life unbearable for the average citizen, with even basic necessities becoming luxuries.

Awali was flanked by Zomba City North councilors including Deputy Mayor Antony Gonani, Mande, Dan Ndazipele, and Mandah—all of whom reaffirmed their unwavering support for his candidacy and the DPP cause.

As the race to September 16 intensifies, Awali’s message is clear: only a return to Mutharika’s leadership, he says, can restore hope and stability to the nation.
