President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has officially commissioned the K10 billion Nyika-Vwaza Water Project, a transformative initiative set to provide clean and reliable water to over 18,000 people in Rumphi and parts of Mzimba.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony held at Thazima, President Chakwera emphasized the importance of the project in sustaining lives in the surrounding communities.
“I am very grateful to all our partners, especially the Government of Germany, for their support. Water is life, and this project will go a long way in improving lives in the areas of Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe, Katumbi, and Mpherembe,” said Chakwera.
The President also called on local communities to safeguard the infrastructure to ensure continued access to clean water. Additionally, he urged residents to support his leadership in the upcoming September 16 General Election, promising further development initiatives, including more clean water projects.

Germany’s Ambassador to Malawi, Ute König, noted that the project will significantly ease the challenges of water access for communities living around the Nyika and Vwaza Game Reserves.
“People have been walking long distances and often encountering dangerous animals just to access water. This project brings real relief,” said König.
Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule described the project as a shining example of how conservation efforts can directly benefit local communities.
“It’s heartwarming to witness communities reaping the benefits of nature conservation. The government is committed to promoting conservation initiatives that serve both people and the environment,” she said.
Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe hailed the project as a long-awaited and much-needed development for the area.
“This feels like a dream come true. We are deeply grateful that this project is now a reality, bringing clean water to our people,” he said.
The Nyika-Vwaza Water Project was funded by the Government of the Republic of Germany through KfW Development Bank.
