Political Earthquake: DPP and LEF Seal Alliance Ahead of Elections

By Suleman Chitera

With just 40 days to go before Malawi heads to the ballot on September 16, the political landscape has taken a dramatic twist — the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has officially joined forces with the Liberation for Economic Freedom (LEF) party, led by the outspoken Pastor David Mbewe.

This surprise alliance, announced today, comes hot on the heels of the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) controversial disqualification of LEF from the presidential race, citing failure to meet certain nomination requirements.

But in true political style, Mbewe is not backing down — he’s doubling down.

Insiders say this move was long in the making. Just weeks ago, sharp-eyed observers spotted LEF loyalists rallying at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe during the nomination ceremony of former president and DPP torchbearer, Peter Mutharika.

Now, the handshake has become a headline.

Political analysts are calling the alliance “a strategic bombshell” — a calculated move by Mutharika to tap into the growing youth and faith-based support behind Mbewe, and for LEF, a lifeline back into the game.

As the clock ticks toward the polls, one thing is clear: this election just got even more unpredictable.

Will this alliance deliver victory — or just stir the pot?
Malawi waits… and watches. 👀🗳️
