United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi has thrown down the gauntlet to Malawi’s traditional leaders, urging them to boldly speak out against politicians who, he says, are destroying the nation through lies and neglect.
Speaking at Chinguni ground in Senior Chief Sitola’s area, Machinga — during celebrations marking the Chief’s coronation — Muluzi did not mince words. He accused some politicians of engaging in “false politics” that leave both chiefs and their subjects suffering.
“Chiefs, you are suffering, and your people are suffering, because of politicians who deceive the people and turn a blind eye to their problems. That is a great disgrace. We in the UDF want to end this. We want people in this country to live happily — and we want you, the chiefs, to criticise us whenever we deliberately do wrong,” Muluzi declared, drawing loud applause from the gathered crowd.
Muluzi’s remarks struck a chord with many in attendance, as he positioned the UDF as a party ready to be held accountable by the very custodians of Malawi’s traditions. His call was not just for political change, but for a renewed culture of honesty, responsibility, and fearless leadership.
