Local Government Elections in Msitu Ward suspended following candidate’s death

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced the suspension of Local Government Elections in Msitu Ward, located in Mchinji South Constituency.

The decision comes in the wake of the unfortunate death of a candidate who was set to contest in the ward elections.

MEC emphasized that this suspension applies solely to the Local Government Elections and does not affect the Presidential or Parliamentary elections in the same ward.

According to Sangwani Mwafulirwa, Director of Media and Public Relations at MEC, the commission is committed to ensuring that all elections are conducted fairly and in accordance with legal provisions.

Mwafulirwa further stated that voters in Msitu Ward will still participate in the Presidential and Parliamentary elections as scheduled, ensuring that democratic processes continue despite the local setback.

The commission continues to review and implement measures to address unforeseen circumstances that may arise during the electoral period.

MEC urged political parties, candidates, and the public to remain calm, patient, and engaged as the commission determines the next steps for the rescheduled Local Government Elections in Msitu Ward.

Voter education and awareness campaigns will continue in the ward to ensure that residents are informed about the updated electoral timetable and procedures.

The commission reaffirmed its dedication to transparency, legal compliance, and stakeholder engagement to maintain public confidence in the electoral process.
