The Nation newspaper of 26th June, 2025 carried a story with a screening headline “What did K17 trillion do?” saying debt, World Bank and IMF conditions, corruption have crippled service delivery making the country to move in reverse.
When the MCP led government under President Dr. Lazarus Chawera entered into government on the 27th June, 2020 it found a debt left by the DPP and Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika at the tune of K3.16 trillion.
Out of this K3.16 trillion national debts, the DPP managed to build Bingu Sports Stadium, Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC), University of MUST, and the state of the art hospital in Nkhatabay district.
The 5 years of President Chakwera has seen the country’s debt moving from K3.16 trillion left by the DPP led government to a whooping K17 trillion meaning that the MCP government alone has borrowed from international money lending institutions about K15 trillion in total.
Going by the Nation newspaper report with a question what K17 trillion has done to the country and citizens? the answer is zero, most of these money have entered into the pockets of crooked individuals of the MCP leaving the country and its citizens poor.
Vice President of the Republic of Malawi Dr. Michael Usi is going around telling Malawians that there is rampant corruption in the government of the MCP challenging government to arrest and prosecute him in a court of law.
Usi is on record having told Malawians that people are stealing in government coffers at nobody’s care meaning that there is free for all money as evidenced by various groups of people who were being invited by President Chakwera to dine with him and the end walk away with K50,00os each for transport reimbursements.
Interestingly, people who were visiting the state houses for free for all food and K50,000s were being ferried by hired lories, buses and minibuses but the state house was refunding them with K50,000s each, a clear example that corruption must have taken a centre stage.
Dr. Usi has further challenged the MCP government that he is open for any investigations including the inside part of his nose to prove him guilty claiming that all of his worth he has, were from ADRA where he was working before made Dr. Saulosi Chilima’s running mate in the 2019 elections.
“They want to arrest me, they want to kill me, I am ready and open for any investigation regarding my wealth even investigating my nose,” he challenged the MCP government.
Mrs. Elizabeth Kaliza Banda of Area 51 in Lilongwe, has asked the MCP led government not to fight with Dr. Michael Usi through killing him but to come out clean dismissing alleged reports that there are thieves in the MCP government.
She said counter-attacking claims by Dr. Usi will not yield anything because Malawians already proved that the MCP led government of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has been a wasteful government the citizens have witnessed ever since the dawn of democracy and multiparty politics in 1994.
The woman has reminded Malawians that President Chakwera outlined development projects his government has implemented in 5 years in the National Assembly only to be found that those completed projects, were not existing on the ground, billions of Kwachas were stolen.
Kaliza has finally asked President Chakwera to tell Malawians what has he done with the K17 trillion debt observing that the magnificent roads and bridges which are being constructed in Lilongwe City are for China and Japanese Aid.
