Mwanamveka Touted as Key Economic Figure in DPP

By Suleman Chitera

Blantyre, Malawi-As political debate intensifies within the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), some members have highlighted Hon. Joseph Mwanamveka as one of the party’s strongest assets in the area of economic policy.

Mwanamveka, who has served in various ministerial roles including Minister of Finance, is said to have built his academic and professional background entirely around economics. Party insiders describe him as “a proven technocrat” whose expertise could be critical in addressing Malawi’s current economic challenges.

Unlike some politicians who have openly criticized former President Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM), Mwanamveka is regarded as respectful and loyal to the former Head of State. Supporters say this distinguishes him from others who have engaged in political attacks.

Observers have also linked internal frustrations within the party to disagreements over the running mate position. Some analysts argue that the anger expressed by Dr. Dalitso Kabambe stems largely from his exclusion from the role, while others have pointed to the need for unity ahead of the 2025 elections.

Political commentators note that the choice of running mate and the overall leadership strategy will be decisive as the DPP positions itself to challenge for power. Supporters of APM maintain that his return represents “a return to proven leadership,” and argue that figures such as Mwanamveka could strengthen the party’s economic agenda.
