Nkhotakota, Malawi – Former President and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader, Arthur Peter Mutharika, has accused President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration of failing to deliver on promises made to Malawians since taking office in 2020.
Speaking at a whistle-stop rally in Nkhotakota District, Mutharika said Malawians placed their trust in Chakwera during the 2020 elections but have since been let down. He stressed that leading a country requires experienced leaders like himself.
“On September 16, you must come out and vote for the DPP. I have heard that the ruling party is holding a rally here just because they heard I was coming to Nkhotakota. That will not help them,” Mutharika told the crowd.
The DPP leader, who is traveling with his wife and senior party officials, is expected to continue his campaign trail at Kaphatenga Trading Centre in Salima District.

Mutharika is using the Lakeshore tour to remind Malawians of his administration’s past achievements and to position the DPP as the best alternative in the September 2025 elections.
Background
Mutharika, who served as Malawi’s president from 2014 to 2020, has been staging a series of whistle-stop rallies across the country. His campaign has focused on the economy, governance, and promises to restore stability if the DPP returns to power.
With the September polls drawing closer, political parties including the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), DPP, UTM, and others are intensifying their campaign activities to win the hearts of voters.
