The Citizens For Transformation (CFT) Movement has thrown its weight behind Vitumbiko Mumba’s candidacy as running mate to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, citing Mumba’s tireless efforts to bridge the gap between the poor and the wealthy.

CFT says it will continue engaging its leadership structures to ensure that the movement aligns with progressive and transformative leaders ahead of the September 16 polls.

Addressing the media in Mzuzu on Wednesday, Kinnear Mlowoka of CFT stated that the CFT Movement Commander Inchief, Timothy Mtambo being youthful and energetic shares commonalities with the Trade Minister, Vitumbiko Mumba hence need to work together.

“It is no longer a secret seeing that some traders are doing everything possible to frustrate government, more particularly the Trade and Industry minister, Vitumbiko Mumba’s efforts to have justifiable goods and service prices,” said Kinnear Mlowoka, praising Mumba’s work.

Commenting on the economic challenges facing the country, Mlowoka blamed the International Monetary Fund-IMF, accusing it of pressurizing the Chakwera-led administration to devalue the kwacha in order to access foreign exchange reserves

Mervin Nxumayo, Young Human Rights Defenders Network chairperson, hailed CFT’s decision, saying it was a crucial step in supporting Mumba’s fight for better livelihood initiatives.

Mtambo’s decision not to support the DPP led alliance sparked tension within the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), citing concerns over the party’s past governance record.

With the September 16th tripartite elections looming, AFORD’s alliance with DPP is expected to yield significant positions, including the second vice presidency, ministerial posts, and parastatal positions, if they emerge victorious.

However, Mtambo’s stance and CFT’s endorsement of Mumba may further fragment the opposition landscape.
