Polling Underway in Malawi’s 2025 General Elections

Malawians are today casting their votes in the 2025 General Elections to elect the President, Members of Parliament, and Ward Councillors.

Seventeen candidates are contesting the presidency, including incumbent President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, former presidents Joyce Banda and Peter Mutharika, Vice President Michael Usi, and former Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Dr. Dalitso Kabambe.

MEC Reaffirms Commitment to Credible and Peaceful Malawi Elections

A total of 229 parliamentary seats are on the ballot, although only 228 are being contested, as the Lilongwe Chilobwe constituency had an unopposed candidate, Lawrence Chakakala Chaziya of the Malawi Congress Party.

At the local government level, 509 ward councillor positions are being contested across the country.

According to the Malawi Electoral Commission, polling centres opened at 6:00 a.m. and voting will close at 4:00 p.m.
