The September 16 presidential election has seen another concession, with National Development Party (NDP) President Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo becoming the third candidate to acknowledge defeat as unofficial results continue to emerge.

In a statement released by his party, Mwenifumbo called on his supporters to rally behind Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Peter Mutharika, noting that he had already encouraged such support during the campaign.

“The people of Malawi have spoken, and we respect their decision. I had previously advised our supporters to stand with Professor Mutharika, and I reaffirm that call today,” the statement read in part.BMTV says hours remaining for Mutharika to be guarded by MDF

Mwenifumbo’s concession follows those of independent candidates Phunziro Mvula and Smart Swira, who both publicly acknowledged defeat earlier this week.

Analysts say the growing number of concessions reflects a maturing democratic culture, with candidates prioritizing national unity over personal ambition.
