Lilongwe, Malawi – Political analyst George Chaima has praised the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for demonstrating transparency and accountability in the ongoing management of the 2025 General Election results.Mutharika says 16th September, is a choice between two options

Chaima pointed out that MEC’s approach has built confidence in the electoral process, citing a practical example from Nkhotakota District. According to him, MEC verified results in three different ways:

  1. Media Dashboard Check – The Commission compared figures displayed on the media dashboard with those physically delivered by election officials from Nkhotakota.
  2. Manual Verification – Officials confirmed that the physical results matched the records received.
  3. System Authentication – Despite the match, MEC insisted that the Constituency Returning Officer (CSR) authenticate the results using their fingerprint to unlock the electronic transmission system. Once accessed, the electronically transmitted results also matched the physical copies.

Chaima emphasized that this level of verification is a clear indication of MEC’s commitment to openness, credibility, and transparency.Malawi Election Update: Mutharika Beats President in Popularity Rankings

“This shows that MEC wants to do its work transparently and without secrecy,” he said.

The analyst’s remarks come at a time when many Malawians are closely monitoring how MEC manages the results following the highly contested polls. The Commission is legally required to announce the final presidential election results within eight days after the closure of polling stations.

Why Transparency Matters in Malawi Elections

Transparency in vote counting and results management is critical for strengthening public trust in democratic institutions. By cross-checking manual and electronic results, MEC ensures that the electoral process is credible, inclusive, and beyond manipulation.
