Independent Candidate Thoko Banda Applauds Peaceful Elections and Urges Respect for Democratic Processes

By Burnett Munthali

Independent presidential candidate Thoko Banda has commended Malawians for conducting peaceful and orderly elections, defying predictions of disruption and showcasing what he described as the nation’s strong democratic character.

In a public statement, Banda emphasized that the elections were not only about choosing a new president but also about selecting members of parliament and ward councillors.

He highlighted the importance of councillors in delivering development at the grassroots level and urged the public not to overlook their role.

Banda called for a national commitment to democratic values, encouraging Malawians to respect diverse political views, even those they may disagree with.

He urged those with concerns over the electoral process to follow the legal route by submitting complaints to the Malawi Electoral Commission or the Registrar of Political Parties.

Banda stressed the importance of supporting MEC in carrying out its constitutional mandate, noting that doing so strengthens both institutional capacity and long-term social cohesion.

He acknowledged that MEC had released results from four districts and was investigating irregularities in approximately ten polling centres.

Banda called for a thorough and impartial review of all grievances to ensure transparency and fairness.
