Blantyre, Malawi — Former President Peter Mutharika has taken a commanding lead in the ongoing tallying of votes, leaving Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate Lazarus Chakwera trailing far behind.
According to official updates from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), results released from several districts show Mutharika’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) widening the gap in key constituencies, a development that observers say has solidified his position in the race.
Political commentators note that the margin between the two frontrunners has become so wide that, even if remaining votes are counted, Chakwera’s chances of overturning the lead appear slim to none.
“This election is already decided in the eyes of many Malawians,” said one analyst. “Mutharika has built an unstoppable lead, and nothing seems likely to change that outcome.”
Meanwhile, celebrations have already begun in some DPP strongholds, with supporters expressing confidence that their leader is on course to reclaim the presidency.
Despite the growing momentum, MEC has urged the public to remain patient until the final results are officially declared.
