The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has confirmed that all election documents from Dedza have been received, dismissing claims made by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had manipulated results in the district.
MCP Allegations in Dedza
Earlier, MCP alleged that some ballot papers had not reached Dedza, suggesting this could be evidence of rigging by the DPP in an area considered one of MCP’s strongholds. The party argued that the missing documents compromised the credibility of the vote.
MEC Clarifies Situation
However, MEC officials have clarified that the ballot papers and related documents from Dedza did indeed arrive, and no evidence of tampering or vote rigging was found. According to MEC, the results remain exactly the same as those previously submitted, with no alterations.
Results Confirmed Without Changes
MEC representative Austin Mapando confirmed that the documents only serve to verify the results already announced. “This is simply a confirmation. The figures remain unchanged,” he said.
Upholding Transparency in Malawi Elections
The clarification is seen as part of MEC’s commitment to maintaining transparency and credibility in Malawi’s electoral process. With Dedza results now verified, the Commission has reiterated that the outcome reflects the genuine will of the people.
