Lilongwe, Malawi – September 24, 2025 – Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president and outgoing Head of State, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, has officially conceded defeat in the September 16 General Elections, congratulating Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM) of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on his return to power.

In a nationally broadcast address from Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, President Chakwera acknowledged the results announced so far by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), stating that they showed an insurmountable lead by his main challenger, Professor Mutharika.

“From those official results it was clear that my main rival, Professor Mutharika, had already secured a surmountable lead. For this reason, a moment ago, I called Professor Mutharika to congratulate him for this historic win,” Chakwera said.

This concession paves the way for Professor Mutharika’s return to the State House, five years after losing the 2020 election to Chakwera. The development marks a historic political comeback for the DPP leader, who has now secured another mandate to govern Malawi until 2030.

The Malawi Electoral Commission is expected to formally declare the official results of the 2025 presidential election at 2:00 PM today, confirming Mutharika’s victory.

National Reaction and Next Steps

Celebrations have already begun across the country, with DPP supporters flooding the streets in cities and villages, waving party flags, singing, and dancing in jubilation. Many Malawians have expressed optimism that the new administration will tackle economic challenges, unemployment, and governance reforms.

Meanwhile, President Chakwera has urged his supporters to remain calm, peaceful, and united as the nation transitions to a new government.

Conclusion

With Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika set to be sworn in once MEC finalizes the results, Malawi prepares for a new chapter in its democratic journey. The peaceful concession by President Chakwera has been hailed as a sign of mature democracy and respect for the will of the people.
