Lilongwe, September 24, 2025 – The Malawi Peace and Unity Commission (MPUC) has applauded President Lazarus Chakwera for conceding defeat in the September 16, 2025, presidential elections, describing the move as a strong demonstration of statesmanship.
MPUC Chairperson, Mary Nkosi, said Chakwera’s decision reflects the expectations of Malawians who desire a peaceful and democratic transition of power. She emphasized that such an act will foster peace, unity, and political stability in the country.
“This is what citizens expected from their leader. By accepting the election outcome, President Chakwera has set a good example for other political leaders and helped the nation avoid unnecessary conflict,” Nkosi stated.
The concession comes after the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announced preliminary results indicating that Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had emerged victorious.
Promoting Unity After Elections
The MPUC noted that Malawi’s young democracy benefits when leaders respect the will of the people. Nkosi further urged other political players to emulate Chakwera’s gesture by prioritizing dialogue, peace, and reconciliation.
Analysts say Chakwera’s concession has the potential to calm tensions, reduce political divisions, and pave the way for a smooth transition of government.
A Landmark for Malawi’s Democracy
Malawi has often faced heated disputes after elections, with tensions spilling into protests. However, the MPUC believes that Chakwera’s acceptance of results will mark a turning point for democratic maturity in the country.
“As a commission, we call upon all citizens to embrace unity, support the new leadership, and work together for national development,” Nkosi added.
Conclusion
With Chakwera’s concession widely praised by both local and international stakeholders, the spotlight is now on how the incoming administration will handle governance, national healing, and economic growth.
The MPUC has reaffirmed its commitment to continue championing peace, dialogue, and reconciliation in Malawi.
