Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema has extended his congratulations to Malawi’s President-Elect Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and Vice President-Elect Justice Dr. Jane Mayemu Ansah.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, President Hichilema commended outgoing President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for demonstrating statesmanship and upholding democratic values throughout the electoral process.

The Zambian leader also praised the people of Malawi for peacefully exercising their democratic rights during the September 16 elections.

Hichilema noted that the conduct of Malawian citizens sets a positive example for both the Southern African region and the wider African continent.

He concluded by extending his wishes for God’s blessings upon Malawi and Africa as a whole, emphasizing hopes for continued peace, stability, and democratic progress.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also congratulated Mutharika on his electoral victory, highlighting the importance of a smooth and transparent transition for the stability of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

Ramaphosa urged all political actors in Malawi to maintain unity and respect democratic processes, ensuring that the aspirations of the Malawian people are fully realized.

The African Union (AU) Commission, through its Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, commended Malawi’s citizens for demonstrating commitment to democracy and civic responsibility during the elections.

Faki Mahamat further encouraged the incoming administration to continue upholding democratic institutions, strengthen governance, and promote inclusive development for all Malawians.

Western partners, including the United States and the European Union, also issued statements welcoming the peaceful conclusion of the electoral process.

The US Ambassador to Malawi highlighted that the elections reaffirm Malawi’s democratic traditions and emphasized the importance of continued respect for human rights, the rule of law, and transparent governance.

Similarly, the European Union delegation praised both the Malawian electorate and electoral institutions for conducting credible and well-monitored elections, noting that such processes are critical to regional stability.

Observers note that these congratulatory messages from regional and international partners not only recognize the legitimacy of the election outcome but also signal confidence in Malawi’s continued democratic development.

As Malawi prepares for a political transition, these endorsements are seen as a reinforcement of the country’s commitment to peaceful change, inclusive governance, and strengthened regional cooperation.
