Salima Police have confirmed the arrest of Miracle Lemani, 34, who is suspected of attempting to break into an NBS Bank Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in Salima District on Sunday night.
According to Salima Police spokesperson, Sub Inspector Rabbecca Ndiwate, the incident occurred around 7 PM, when Lemani allegedly tried to damage the ATM machine with the intention of stealing cash.
“Following CCTV footage obtained from the bank, our officers managed to identify and apprehend the suspect shortly after the incident,” said Ndiwate.
She added that the suspect was taken into custody pending further investigation, and police are working closely with the bank’s security department to assess the extent of the damage.
However, police say preliminary findings suggest that Lemani may be suffering from mental health challenges.
“At this stage, we have requested a medical examination to determine his mental condition before proceeding with formal charges,” Ndiwate explained.
The incident has raised security concerns among Salima residents, with many calling for tightened surveillance and security patrols around financial institutions, especially during night hours.
Meanwhile, authorities have assured the public that measures are being put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
