President Arthur Peter Mutharika has appointed former President Joyce Banda as Malawi’s special envoy to Madagascar to help mediate peace following the recent coup in the island nation.

The move comes as part of regional efforts led by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to restore constitutional order and stability in Madagascar after its democratically elected government was overthrown.

According to the Office of the President and Cabinet, Banda will represent Malawi in her capacity as a seasoned stateswoman and peace mediator with extensive experience in conflict resolution and governance.

She is expected to hold meetings with various political and military leaders in Madagascar to encourage inclusive dialogue and a peaceful transition back to democratic governance.

Banda’s mission underscores President Mutharika’s commitment, as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, to ensuring peace and security within the Southern African region.

Sources within the SADC Secretariat have confirmed that Banda’s visit will focus on promoting national reconciliation and encouraging respect for democratic principles and the rule of law.

The situation in Madagascar remains tense following the abrupt dissolution of Parliament and reports that President Andry Rajoelina has fled the country amid rising unrest.

Observers say the political vacuum has created uncertainty, with fears that the instability could deepen unless swift diplomatic intervention succeeds in restoring order.

Regional leaders have expressed confidence in Banda’s ability to mediate effectively, citing her successful involvement in past peace and governance initiatives across Africa.

Her experience as Malawi’s first female president and her global recognition as a champion of democracy and women’s leadership make her a credible figure for high-level diplomatic engagement.

President Mutharika’s decision to deploy Banda reflects Malawi’s growing role in regional diplomacy and peace-building under his leadership.

As Banda prepares to travel to Madagascar, the international community will be watching closely, hopeful that her intervention will pave the way for calm and a return to democratic governance.

Her mission represents a critical test of SADC’s collective resolve to prevent further instability and uphold the values of peace, unity, and democratic legitimacy across the region.
