The sessions are designed to familiarise the new lawmakers with parliamentary procedures, protocols, and expectations.
The orientation program will run through to Friday, providing members with an in-depth understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
The theme of the orientation is: “From Election to Action: Empowering Parliamentarians for Impactful Legislation, Governance and Transformative Leadership.”
During the sessions, participants will engage in discussions, workshops, and briefings on legislative processes, ethical conduct, and effective governance.
They will also be introduced to parliamentary committees and their functions, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to policy-making.
Experienced parliamentary staff and legal experts will guide the new MPs on how to navigate the legislative environment and fulfill their mandates.
The orientation aims to equip members with the necessary skills and knowledge to legislate effectively and serve their constituencies with accountability and transparency.
Following the completion of the orientation, the official swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place next week.
During the ceremony, the MPs will take their oaths of office, formally assuming their roles as the nation’s elected representatives.
The swearing-in will be a historic moment for many first-time MPs and will symbolize the beginning of their service to the Malawian people.
Observers note that the orientation and swearing-in sessions are critical in ensuring that parliamentarians are prepared to meet the challenges of governance and legislative responsibilities.
The government has emphasized the importance of this preparatory period in fostering a competent, effective, and accountable legislative body.
As Malawi embarks on this new parliamentary term, expectations are high for transformative leadership, robust law-making, and impactful governance.
The orientation program at BICC reflects the commitment to empowering parliamentarians with knowledge, tools, and resources necessary for effective service.
It is anticipated that the sessions will also strengthen collaboration and understanding among members from different political parties, fostering a more cohesive legislative environment.
The new MPs are expected to return to their constituencies well-prepared, ready to translate policy knowledge into tangible development outcomes for the citizens they represent.
The orientation marks not just an administrative process but a foundational step in shaping the legislative agenda for Malawi’s upcoming parliamentary term.
