In a major government reshuffle aimed at strengthening governance and policy implementation, President Arthur Peter Mutharika has appointed Frank Farouk Mbeta as the new Attorney General of the Republic of Malawi.

The appointment, announced from the Office of the President and Cabinet, is part of Mutharika’s ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency and accountability within government institutions.

According to the statement, President Mutharika exercised his constitutional powers to make several key appointments:

Frank Farouk Mbeta – Attorney General (Government Advisor on Legal Affairs)

Gertrude Huwa SC – Solicitor General

Festino Maele – Government Litigator

Cathy Maulidi – Spokesperson for the Office of the President

Henry Mukhuna – Presidential Advisor on Manifesto Implementation

Pastor Timothy Khoviwa – Presidential Advisor on Religious Affairs

The President said these appointments are aimed at ensuring that government operations continue to align with Malawi’s constitutional values, rule of law, and national development agenda.

“These individuals bring vast experience and commitment to national service. I have confidence that they will serve Malawians with dedication and integrity,” said President Mutharika.

The newly appointed officials are expected to assume their duties after being sworn in, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the Mutharika administration.

Strengthening Leadership and Accountability

Political analysts have described the appointments as a strategic move by President Mutharika to consolidate his leadership team ahead of crucial policy rollouts and to ensure the effective implementation of his administration’s manifesto promises.

The inclusion of Pastor Timothy Khoviwa as Religious Affairs Advisor also signals Mutharika’s intent to strengthen engagement with faith communities, which play a vital role in promoting peace and unity in Malawi.

A Renewed Focus on Legal and Institutional Reforms

With Frank Farouk Mbeta as Attorney General and Gertrude Huwa SC as Solicitor General, the legal arm of the government is expected to focus on reforms that enhance justice delivery, transparency, and good governance.

These appointments come at a time when Malawi continues to prioritize rule of law, economic growth, and institutional integrity as key pillars of national development.
