Self- claimed President of the poor people in Malawi – political activist Bon Kalindo has called on the new government of the DPP to revisit and review salaries of councilors for them to contribute positively to development of this country.

Kalindo said ever since the country started voting for councilors, their salaries have not been revisited, reviewed or amended but they are the most important people in the development of their respective areas.

He said for years, councilors have been receiving K150,000 per month as salaries and this was after raising it from K70,000 saying for government to reach to the new figure, councilors through their body- MALGA had0 to pressurize it so that they be receiving K150,000.

Speaking through an audio clip, Kalindo said the introduction of K5 billion Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is a good initiative by government for constituencies to plan for their own development projects which previously the council has been doing that.

Kalindo said at the end of five years, government will be measured on the way it has implemented the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and at the top of this fund lies the councilor whose salaries per month is K150,000.

He said it is sad to note that councilors beside receiving miserable salaries, they live with the people in their villages while Members of Parliament (MPs) live in towns and their salary is K5 million per month saying this difference, is hindering the work of councilors in the rural areas.

The activist has expressed fears that if councilors salaries are not revisited, impact of the K5 billion Constituency Development Fund (CDE) will not be there, the money will go down into their pockets and at the end of the day, the constituencies suffering for no tangible projects.

“I propose to government to review and revisit salaries for councilors for CDF to have impacts and failing which, expects substandard projects in the areas,” said Kalindo.

He has joined all those that are calling Parliament to adopt Chichewa as the official language of communication in Parliament claiming that some MPs have spent 10 years contributing nothing to parliamentary proceedings because they cannot express themselves in English.

The activist has expressed hope that Parliament will adopt Chichewa as the second official language saying this will make all parliamentarians to speak of their constituencies better than before claiming that English is a borrowed language.
