Mangochi Municipality has raised alarm over the increasing practice of residents disposing used diapers in Mpima Forest Reserve along the Mangochi–Liwonde road.

The council fears that this behaviour could trigger a cholera outbreak as the rainy season approaches.

Deputy Mayor Ishmael Nedi told MBC Digital that the municipal authorities are fully aware of the situation and are taking steps to address it.

He said the council is planning a major cleanup exercise to restore the area and prevent further environmental contamination.

Nedi further revealed that the council is in the process of purchasing a new dumpsite along the Ndata–Nansenga road to provide a proper waste disposal alternative for residents.

He explained that the waste collected at the new site will later be recycled into useful products as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability.

The Deputy Mayor also acknowledged that Mangochi Municipality is struggling with inadequate waste management equipment.

He disclosed that the entire town is currently being serviced by only one waste collection vehicle.

Nedi said this shortage has made it difficult for the council to respond effectively to the growing waste management needs of the expanding municipality.

He appealed to residents to take responsibility for their environment and avoid practices that put public health at risk.

The council says it remains committed to finding long-term solutions to improve waste management and keep Mangochi clean and safe.
