Minister of Information and Member of Parliament Shadrec Namalomba has accused former President Lazarus Chakwera and his MCP administration of carelessly accumulating massive debts that Malawi will struggle to repay for many years.
Speaking during a media briefing, Namalomba claimed that the previous administration “squandered and misused” huge sums of public money through excessive foreign borrowing, luxury spending, and unnecessary international trips. He alleged that even if Malawians worked tirelessly to rebuild the country, the debt burden left behind by Chakwera’s leadership would remain difficult to clear.
According to Namalomba, the MCP government had prioritised borrowing from foreign nations while its leaders “enjoyed themselves,” purchasing houses abroad and living lavishly at the expense of taxpayers. He argued that such decisions placed Malawi’s economy under extreme pressure, causing suffering among citizens and, in some cases, loss of life as people struggled with rising costs of living and diminishing hope.
However, Namalomba insisted that the situation is beginning to change under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). He said the new administration has introduced measures aimed at stabilising the economy, including improved tax collection targeting high-income earners to ensure faster repayment of national debt.
“Wisdom brings solutions,” he said. “Under the leadership of Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, we are putting Malawi back on a recovery path. DPP is working tirelessly to restore economic stability and fulfil the vision that President Mutharika has for this nation.”
Namalomba added that the DPP administration is committed to reversing the damage left by the previous government and returning the country to a position of growth and hope.
