Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization, Joseph Mwanamvekha, has disclosed that Malawi’s private sector has so far contributed at least K1.5 billion towards the national hunger response plan.
Mwanamvekha revealed this at Capital Hill on Monday where he received a K125 million donation from Nyasa Tobacco. He said the mobilisation of resources for food interventions continues to receive overwhelming support both locally and internationally, raising confidence that government will meet the financial requirements for the response plan.
“This positive response demonstrates the spirit of unity and shared responsibility in addressing the hunger situation affecting thousands of households across the country,” said Mwanamvekha.
Nyasa Tobacco chairman, Fleetwood Hayiya, said the company felt obliged to take part in the relief efforts, noting that some of the households hit by hunger are linked to the company’s operations. He added that as a responsible corporate citizen, the company saw it necessary to stand with government in reaching the affected families.
The donation was made through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), which requires about K210 billion to adequately supply food to all the affected districts.
