Former Malawi National Football Team striker Esau “Black Mamba” Kanyenda has died.
The news comes barely a day after Kanyenda posted on his Facebook page revealing that he had been diagnosed with liver cancer, a message that shocked fans across the country.
According to family members, Kanyenda passed away earlier today after his condition worsened. His brother confirmed the tragic development, saying the family is devastated by the loss.
Football Legends Association Chairperson Jim Kalua has described Kanyenda’s death as a huge blow to Malawian football, praising him as a disciplined, hardworking and inspirational figure who lifted the national flag high.
Kanyenda, who played professionally in South Africa, Russia, Denmark and Georgia, remains one of Malawi’s most celebrated strikers of the 2000s.
