Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ hopes of going top of the TNM Super League suffered a major setback on Wednesday after a 2-1 defeat to Mzuzu City Hammers at Mzuzu Stadium—bringing their impressive 24-match unbeaten run to an end.
The Nomads went into the match with a chance to overtake leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, but the loss keeps them second with 56 points from 25 matches, level with Bullets but behind on goal difference.
Head coach Bob Mpinganjira expressed disappointment with his side’s inability to convert their chances.
“That is football. We played well and created some chances and we got punished,” said Mpinganjira.
The defeat comes just days after Wanderers dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Chitipa United, raising concerns over their recent form as the title race tightens.
Meanwhile, defending champions Silver Strikers—currently third with 47 points—have an opportunity to close the gap to six points if they beat Kamuzu Barracks at Silver Stadium tomorrow. The Bankers still have two matches in hand, making the title chase even more competitive.
On the other end of the table, Mzuzu City Hammers boosted their survival hopes with the crucial victory. They now sit 14th with 27 points from 27 matches, as they continue battling to stay in the top flight.
With just a handful of fixtures remaining, the race for the title and the fight for survival are heating up—setting the stage for a dramatic finish to the 2025 TNM Super League season.
