The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) says it is disappointed by the decision of the Member of Parliament for Mzimba Central Constituency, Vitumbiko Mumba, to continue serving as an independent MP.
Mumba, who was the runner-up in the MCP presidential race this year, told journalists last week that he wants to continue developing the people of his constituency who voted for him by serving as an independent MP.
However, speaking to Nkhoma Synod Radio, MCP’s second spokesperson, Ken Msonda, said the party did not expect this and said they believe Mumba should carefully reconsider his decision.
Meanwhile, a political science expert and spokesperson for the Political Science Association of Malawi, Mavuto Bamusi, said he believes Mumba made the decision due to certain challenges within the party.
