The Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe has granted bail to Vitumbiko Mumba and Jessie Kabwila, who are facing charges related to the alleged issuance of false statements to the public.
Senior Resident Magistrate Bracious Kondowe granted the bail after formally reading out the charges against the two accused.
According to the prosecution, Mumba and Kabwila allegedly informed Malawians that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had rigged the September 16 general election. The State argues that the statements were made before the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) had officially announced the election results.
Prosecutors told the court that the alleged statements had the potential to mislead the public and undermine confidence in the country’s electoral process.
The court granted bail and adjourned the matter, with the two accused expected to return at a later date to answer the charges.
Further proceedings in the case are expected to continue as scheduled by the court.
