Southern Region Governor Mzomera Ngwira has hailed members and supporters of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) who stood firm with the party during its most difficult period in opposition, describing them as the backbone of the party’s resilience and survival.
Speaking during an engagement with party loyalists, Ngwira commended those who contested and worked on the DPP ticket at a time when political pressure and uncertainty were high, noting that their commitment went beyond slogans and public appearances.
“These are people who dug into their own pockets, sacrificed their time, resources and personal comfort to ensure that the DPP remained alive and organised when it was out of government,” Ngwira said. “Without their dedication, the party would not be where it is today.”
He emphasised that the period in opposition tested the true loyalty of party members, separating fair-weather supporters from those genuinely committed to the DPP’s ideals and long-term vision. According to Ngwira, it was this unwavering support that kept party structures active at grassroots level despite limited resources.
Ngwira assured the loyal cadres that their sacrifices would not be forgotten. As governor of the region, he pledged to work towards restoring dignity and recognition to those who stood with the party when it mattered most.
“It is only right that those who defended and sustained the party during hard times are respected and recognised,” he said. “Their contribution is part of the DPP’s history, and that history must be honoured.”
The remarks have been welcomed by party supporters, many of whom see Ngwira’s message as a sign of renewed unity and appreciation within the DPP. Analysts say such recognition could strengthen morale and mobilise supporters ahead of future political engagements, as the party continues to rebuild and reposition itself nationally.
Ngwira’s message reinforces the DPP’s narrative of resilience, loyalty and gratitude—values the party says will guide its path forward as it seeks to regain political ground and public trust.
