Saudi Arabia has renewed its commitment to supporting Malawi’s economic recovery and long-term development, reinforcing growing cooperation between Lilongwe and key Gulf partners.
The pledge was made on 17 December 2025 during a high-level meeting between Saudi Arabia’s Assistant Minister of Finance for Macro-Fiscal Policies and International Relations, Abdullah Bin Zara, and Malawi’s Minister of Finance, Joseph Mwanamvekha.
During the meeting, Mwanamvekha presented Malawi’s current socio-economic challenges, highlighting the worsening food insecurity situation in which more than four million Malawians are in urgent need of food assistance, as detailed in the latest Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report.
In response, Bin Zara reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s solidarity with Malawi, announcing plans to provide budgetary support and humanitarian assistance through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, a move expected to cushion vulnerable communities while supporting the country’s fiscal stability.
The discussions underscored Saudi Arabia’s readiness to play a meaningful role in Malawi’s recovery agenda, particularly at a time when the country is navigating economic shocks driven by climate-related disasters and global financial pressures.
Mwanamvekha’s visit to the Gulf region is part of a broader diplomatic and economic engagement strategy aimed at strengthening partnerships with Gulf nations, with a focus on macro-economic stabilisation, infrastructure development, and healthcare investment.
As part of the visit, the Malawian Finance Minister is also scheduled to meet Mansour Al Mulla, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company (ADQ), to explore potential investment opportunities that could spur growth, create jobs, and enhance Malawi’s development prospects.
The renewed engagement signals a deepening of Malawi–Gulf relations and offers renewed hope for increased financial support, humanitarian relief, and strategic investments to drive Malawi’s economic transformation.
