Police in South Africa have impounded a Malawian-registered bus in Durban after discovering that it was dangerously overloaded with passengers.

According to police reports, the bus was officially recorded as carrying 67 passengers, but a physical inspection revealed that there were 117 people on board—almost double the permitted number.
The bus was stopped during a routine traffic and road safety operation aimed at enforcing transport regulations and ensuring passenger safety. Authorities said the level of overcrowding posed a serious risk to human life, especially in the event of an accident.

Police immediately impounded the vehicle and ordered all excess passengers to disembark. The driver and bus operators are expected to face charges related to overloading, reckless endangerment, and violating South African road traffic laws.

South African authorities have reiterated their commitment to strict enforcement of transport regulations, warning cross-border operators that safety standards will not be compromised.
More details are expected as investigations continue.
